The Volkswagen Polo has been a popular first car since it’s launch in 1975. Over the decades the Polo has matured into the perfect balance of car for the new driver. Easy to handle, cheap to run and insure. The Polo fits neatly in the VW range between the compact VW Up and the family sized VW Golf.
Most popular as a first car are the VW Polo 4th generation from 2002 to 2009 and the 5th generation from 2009 to 2017. From the 4th generation the 1.2 E (60ps) 3 door is cheap to insure being rated insurance group 3 only. As with any car, make sure you check the specific model before completing a purchase – some Polo are classified in insurance group 11 like the 1.4 E TDI (70ps) 5d

Volkswagen Polo hatchback (2009-2014) review – CarBuyer
Drivers looking for a classy supermini look no further. The Volkswagen Polo seems to have it all: good looks, a high quality interior, plenty of space and sensible pricing. If it falls down in one area it’s the driving experience, which just isn’t as much fun as with some of its supermini rivals. Economy in all versions is good, but for maximum fuel efficiency the BlueMotion is a highlight – it manages 80.7 miles on just one gallon of diesel. With its shrunken Golf looks and plentiful space you might want to try the Polo before opting for the Golf — unless you regularly carry four passengers, there really is very little to choose between themCarBuyer

Volkswagen Polo 2018 in-depth review – Carbuyer
The Volkswagen Polo is a supermini that offers potential Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208 and Vauxhall Corsa customers an upmarket alternative. The latest Polo is excellent to drive, spacious, comfortable, safe, well made and available with sophisticated options. As long as you’re happy with the lack of a three-door model, it’s easy to recommend.CarBuyer
